Working Definitions
Working definitions are essential for consistency and clarity because they ensure everyone shares the same understanding of key concepts, minimizing miscommunication. By establishing these definitions, we create a solid foundation for meaningful discussions and a shared framework for learning and growth.
BEING KIND - Authentic behavior rooted in genuine care for the well-being of others. Kindness may involve saying or doing what is necessary for someone's growth or best interest, even if it is uncomfortable or difficult. True kindness prioritizes compassion and long-term positive outcomes over momentary ease.
BEING NICE - Polite, surface-level behavior often aimed at being agreeable or avoiding conflict. Being nice may prioritize maintaining appearances or pleasing others, even if it means withholding honesty or authenticity.
HONESTY -
INTERPERSONAL HONESTY - Being open and truthful with others in a way that respects their feelings and maintains the integrity of the relationship. It involves clear communication, vulnerability, and empathy.
SELF-HONESTY - Being truthful with yourself about your feelings, motivations, strengths, weaknesses, and choices. It involves a willingness to face uncomfortable truths and take responsibility for your actions.
SITUATION HONESTY - Using THINK before you speak.
INNER STRENGTH - The emotional and mental fortitude that empowers you to remain resilient, authentic, and courageous in the face of adversity.
INTENTION - A focused and purposeful mindset or commitment that guides thoughts, actions, and energy toward a desired outcome or way of being. It serves as a personal compass, aligning choices and behaviors with one’s values and aspirations.
PATIENCE (Ada’s Definition) - The ability to remain calm and endure difficult circumstances without becoming annoyed or angry.
REFLECTION - A thoughtful process of looking inward to examine one’s experiences, thoughts, feelings, and actions in order to gain insight and understanding. It fosters self-awareness and growth by encouraging meaningful connections between past events and present or future intentions.
SELF-AWARENESS - The conscious knowledge of one's own character, feelings, motives, and desires.
SELF-DISCIPLINE - The ability to control impulses, delay gratification, and consistently work toward long-term goals.
SELF-INQUIRY - Holding space for yourself. A helpful question to begin with is, “How do I feel about _________?”
STOP AND BE STILL - A daily practice for paying attention to the frustrations, pains, and upsets underlying your feelings, thoughts, behavior, and self-talk. You are temporarily removing yourself from all activity, noise, and conversations and truly listening to all the stuff going on inside of you. We recommend aiming for 15 minutes a day, but any amount of time you spend in Stop and Be Still will be beneficial.
