Befriending Ourselves

Join us for our FREE book club on Sunday, February 20th, at 1:30PM!

Hello Everyone!

Today is Valentine’s Day – a day that some people thoroughly enjoy and also a day that brings sadness and depression to others. While there may be chocolate, cards, and special dinners, there might also be grief, disappointment, and a sense of deep loneliness.

This coming Sunday, February 20th, is our next book club meeting, and we will be having a discussion about loneliness, what healthy interdependence means, and how helpful it is when we learn to BEFRIEND OURSELVES – something that is so very important on a day like today.

Together by Vivek Murthy, MD has been such a thought-provoking book for the two of us. It has caused us to really think about who we are in relationship to those close to us. In our experience, it can be easy to become disconnected from others because of personal busyness and also lately because of the pandemic. However, sometimes, it is even easier to become disconnected from ourselves! One of the many insights Dr. Murthy presents in his book is that:

In order to move independently through the world, we all need to learn to treat ourselves with the kindness, encouragement, and candor that we would offer a good friend. This is what we’re doing when we give ourselves a pep talk on difficult days, when we treat ourselves to a calming walk to let off stress or tell ourselves to get to sleep early when we feel a cold coming on.

If you would like to join us for our discussion, our book club will meet simultaneously in person and on Zoom from 1:30 to 2:30PM (mst). There will NOT be two separate meetings. No need to worry if you haven’t read the book - our discussion will be based on the concepts presented in the book, not written details.

And, if you haven’t already heard, our book club is now FREE!

Please let us know if you’d like to participate via Zoom and we will send you the link on Saturday.

For those of you who would like to plan ahead for our book club in March, April, and May, we will move on to our next book:

Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive by Marc Brackett, Ph.D

If you’d like to get it on Amazon, here’s the link: https://www.amazon.com/Permission-Feel-Emotional-Intelligence-Well-Being/dp/1250212839/

Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday,
Annette and Ada
